Demand for LCD TV panels whose supply has been undermined by the coronavirus outbreak has turned strong, and in turn pushed up demand for LED backlighting, according to industry sources.
Global LCD TV panel inventory has deceased significantly since fourth-quarter 2019, the sources added.
Production of mini LED PoB (package on board) backlight units (BLUs) has begun in first-quarter 2020, and demand for mini LED PoB-backlit LCD TVs is expected to rise, as long as the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will still take place, the sources noted, adding that such LCD TVs are competitive compared with OLED ones in performance-price ratio.
For 2020, LED packaging service provider Everlight Electronics focuses on mini LED BLUs for 55-, 65- and 75-inch LCD TVs and gaming notebooks, with the corresponding revenues to take up over 10% of overall LED BLUs revenues and 3% of consolidated revenues, the sources said.
Vertically-integrated LED maker Lextar Electronics expects mini LED products to contribute revenues beginning second-half 2020 and account for 5-7% of 2020 consolidated revenues.
