Ready for inverterized appliances with locally-designed and production-ready solutions

India’s appliances market is expected to grow over the next 5 years, driven by a young population and a fast-growing middle class that will create a huge consumer base. India will need to add 200 Gigawatts of capacity within the next 30 years just to keep up with the corresponding energy demand. Smart use of electrical energy can relieve some of the pressure on India’s energy supply, for example with inverterized home appliances, using techniques of motor speed control.

Some of the major home appliances including air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, and ceiling fans are part of every Indian household planning. For air conditioners, India has a volume of 7 million per year, and already 60 percent of them are inverterized. This is an encouraging sign for major local players to develop local manufacturing capability for electronic inverter solutions. At present, most of the solutions are imported as ready boards from China.

Local refrigerator and washing machine players are facing a similar situation as units sold increases and technology trends toward inverterization. We also see a growing trend toward using more power electronics to achieve energy efficiency in other appliances–dryers, vacuum cleaners, desert coolers, air purifiers, and many more.

Taking a step back, we find that the market share of the locally made TV has reduced substantially with the arrival of the global brands. One of the key reasons for this was the lack of local electronics design and manufacturing capability. This shows that dependence on imported electronics is not a sustainable solution for local players.

The current market indications are pointing to a rapid inverterization in areas like predictive maintenance, voice assistance, gas detection, human sensors, and IoT-enabled devices. These, along with new innovations, are part of the future smart homes. By investing in local production of locally designed solutions, local players will have a greater chance at maintaining long-term market success.

Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL) has been driving energy efficiency program aggressively across the nation. After successfully deploying LED bulbs, they are now focusing on other applications like ceiling fans, air conditioners and water pumps.

By focusing on a roadmap of successively improved specifications for energy efficiency standards and leaving cost optimization to the market forces, EESL will be able to encourage local players to participate without worrying about erosion in their profit margins, and help shift the market to lower energy consuming appliances.

Microelectronics from Infineon is a key to a better future. We make inverter technology possible with sensors, microcontrollers and power semiconductors. As a leading player in the appliances market with experience of more than 10 years and long-term product and technology roadmap, Infineon can partner to more effectively serve the needs of the local players.

Our iMOTION range of digital controllers, Integrated Power Modules (IPMs), drivers, MCUs, SMPS solutions, and other products enable us to be a complete reliable solutions provider. This range of products has special application focus on inverterized appliances. In India, with our sales and technical team supporting through regional offices and labs, we work closely with all local customers to design complete electronics solutions to support their long-term technology roadmap.

In the past 2 years, we have supported our local design partners to develop solutions for our customers focusing on highly reliable electronics solutions with fast time to market. We are now ready to replace the imported inverter boards in appliances including air conditioners, refrigerators, and others with locally designed, cost competitive solutions ready for manufacturing. Infineon is open to work with any major industry player who is now looking for replacement of imported solutions with locally manufactured solutions. Players will need to look for cost optimization as volumes and ecosystem grows; and Infineon with an already established local partner network can assist in faster time to market with ready solutions and local technical team support.
