India’s appliances market is expected to grow over the next 5 years, driven by a young population and a fast-growing middle class that will create a huge consumer base. India will need to add 200 Gigawatts of capacity within the next 30 years just to keep up with the corresponding energy demand. Smart use of electrical energy can relieve some of the pressure on India’s energy supply, for example with inverterized home appliances, using techniques of motor speed control.
Some of the major home appliances including air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, and ceiling fans are part of every Indian household planning. For air conditioners, India has a volume of 7 million per year, and already 60 percent of them are inverterized. This is an encouraging sign for major local players to develop local manufacturing capability for electronic inverter solutions. At present, most of the solutions are imported as ready boards from China.
Local refrigerator and washing machine players are facing a similar situation as units sold increases and technology trends toward inverterization. We also see a growing trend toward using more power electronics to achieve energy efficiency in other appliances–dryers, vacuum cleaners, desert coolers, air purifiers, and many more.
Taking a step back, we find that the market share of the locally made TV has reduced substantially with the arrival of the global brands. One of the key reasons for this was the lack of local electronics design and manufacturing capability. This shows that dependence on imported electronics is not a sustainable solution for local players.
The current market indications are pointing to a rapid inverterization in areas like predictive maintenance, voice assistance, gas detection, human sensors, and IoT-enabled devices. These, along with new innovations, are part of the future smart homes. By investing in local production of locally designed solutions, local players will have a greater chance at maintaining long-term market success.
