Panasonic has declared its intention to reduce its carbon footprint by setting a target to go energy neutral for the equipment it produces. With a dual strategy of developing heat pump technology and improving energy efficiency it intends to reach that goal by 2036, Panasonic Europe’s CEO Laurent Abadie has announced.
Key to this goal is a target to increase its air-to-water heat pump production seven-fold between now and 2025, he said.
The company has also announced its intention to develop more integrated heating and cooling technologies, via a strategic partnership with Systemair. The Swedish manufacturer has 27 factories of its own, which will enable the two companies to create a ’new and strong value proposition to satisfy both residential and commercial requirements’.
Panasonic Heating and Cooling’s European MD Enrique Vilamitjana said: “We have seen the validation of our approach in developing both heating and cooling equipment, but in order to be successful we need applied systems too. Our partnership with Systemair will enable us to work together on developing seamless ventilation and heating technology… in one box.”
The partners concede that a major challenge in seeking more integration is in ensuring that contractors and engineers are trained in both disciplines of heating and cooling.
Vilamitjana said that in line with the emphasis on be energy neutral, Panasonic’s heating and cooling business would be looking at how to integrate the manufacturer’s energy storage technology into the portfolio. He said: ”The storage battery is certainly a key for the future.”
The manufacturer is thus looking to expand on three fronts: heating, via its heat pump technology; ventilation, via the partnership with Systemair; and cooling, thanks to its AC and CO2 refrigeration technology. Vilamitjana said “CO2 is a core technology for Panasonic and I believe it will play a big part in the future.” At the same time, he said, the AC business is intent on achieving the number three spot in Europe: “I think we will see big growth.”―RAC
