Global TV Panel Shipments Increase In 3Q18

Global TV panel unit shipments grow 9.3 percent on quarter and 10.1 percent on year to 75.1 million units in the third quarter of 2018. In terms of area shipments, global TV panel shipments also expanded by 13.2 percent sequentially and 14.9 percent on year in the third quarter, according to data from China-based Sigmaintell Consulting.

BOE Technology shipped 14.6 million TV panels in the third quarter of 2018, making it the world’s largest LCD TV panel supplier in terms of unit shipments. Inventory build-ups for the Double 11 shopping festival and peak-season demand helped push TV panel shipment growth, both in terms of unit and area shipments, said the consulting firm.

Panel shipments from BOE have continued to grow as its 8.5G line in Fuzhou is now running at full capacity, and the company is also ramping up output from its first 10.5 fab in Hefei. BOE has also continued to optimize its product mix with shipments of 65-inch and above panels increasing 200 percent sequentially in the third quarter. The efforts helped the vendor remain in third place in terms of area shipments.

LG Display ranked second in unit shipments with its TV panel shipments reaching 12.28 million units, up 5 percent on quarter. But the firm took the number one title in area shipments as it has been leader in 55-, 65-, 75- inch and other large-size segments, Sigmaintell noted.

Innolux came in third place with shipments totaling 12 million units, buoyed by a 45 percent sequential growth in shipments of 50-inch panels in the quarter. The firm has also managed to reduce its inventory effectively.

Samsung Display ranked fourth in unit shipments and second in area shipments thanks to strong growth in shipments of large-size panels, particularly 75- and 83-inch ones.

China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) shipped nearly 10 million TV panels in the third quarter to take fifth place, with its shipments of 32-, 43- and 55-inch panels growing significantly in the period.

AU Optronics (AUO) came in sixth with its third-quarter shipments staying flat as compared to a quarter earlier as the company has been shifting its focus to high value-added and high-end display products.

In terms of panel sizes, shipments of 32-inch TV panels grew 8 percent sequentially in the third quarter and accounted for 31 percent of global total TV panels shipments.

Also on a quarterly basis, shipments of 39 to 45-inch panels were down 1 percent, 55-inch panels dipped 4.1 percent, and shipments of 65-inch and above sizes expanded 44 percent and 80 percent, respectively.― Digi Times
