Global shipments of large-size LCD panels (9-inch and above sizes) are expected to grow by a CAGR of 0.2 percent in terms of unit shipments and 5 percent in terms of area shipments during the period between 2018 and 2023, according to an estimate of Digitimes Research.
Growth of large-size panel shipments for IT applications such as notebooks, monitors, AIO PCs and tablets will be rather limited during the forecast 5-year period, but a continued increase in the average size of TV panels will help boost the area shipment growth in the period.
While large-size panels for TV applications will continue to develop toward higher definition and ultra large sizes to maintain or even increase product prices and profit margins, panels for other applications such as those for industry, medication, public information display (PID), large-size vehicles, and automatic teller machines, are expected to start gaining momentum. Production of these panels is highly customized in small volumes and diverse designs.
Area shipments of large-size LCD panels other than TV applications are expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.7 percent during the forecast period. Among them, panels for large-size vehicle displays will expand at a CAGR of 15.8 percent, driven by the increase in sizes of automotive dashboards and central information display (CID) products.
Meanwhile, panel shipments to the PID sector are expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.7 percent, buoyed by rising demand from the commercial-use display, smart traffic and smart retailing sectors.— DigiTimes
