China-based flat panel maker China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) and Xiamen Sanan Integrated Circuit (Sanan-IC) will set up a joint-venture lab for developing micro LED materials, manufacturing processes and equipment, according to industry sources.
The lab entails initial investment of CNY300 million (US$42.9 million), with CSOT and Sanan-IC holding 55% and 45% stakes respectively, the sources said.
San’an Optoelectronics – the parent company of Sanab-IC – in 2018 signed with Samsung Electronics for a 3-year cooperation to develop micro LED technology, and in July 2019 began setting up a mini/micro LED production base with target annual production capacity of 2.1 million mini LED wafers and 260,000 micro LED wafers in central China, the sources noted.
China-based display panel maker BOE Technology and US-based startup Rohinni in January 2019 established a JV for developing mini LED-backlit LCD and micro LED displays.
At CES 2020, Samsung showcased The Wall, a 292-inch TV formed by micro LED display modules; Seoul Semiconductor exhibited its Micro Clean LED display technology; and AU Optronics (AUO) showcased a 12.1-inch micro LED display.
