BOE To Race Against Samsung Display For OLED Panel Capacity

BOE Technology has been shifting its focus to the development of OLED panels and is likely to wage a game of chicken in the race for capacity against Samsung Display in 2020-21. Most panel suppliers are eyeing OLED panel orders to be released by Apple in 2020, noting that the US-based vendor is expected to launch three OLED-based iPhone devices in 2020, with total shipments of these devices likely to surpass 200 million units. Industry observers in Korea believe that the share of OLED panels supplied by BOE to Apple will increase significantly from 2020 as long as the yield rate at the Chinese panel maker continues to improve. In 2021, BOE is expected to ship 45 million OLED handset panels to Apple, followed by LG Display with 26 million units, while Samsung Display will see its shipments decline to 150 million units from 230 million units in 2019.
